Update 2-21-2007

CERRITO CREEK WORK PARTY SATURDAY
Starting 10 am this Saturday, Feb. 24, we'll continue our wonderful progress on Cerrito Creek at the foot of Albany Hill. Grasses and cow parsnips seeded in fall have sprouted, and the willows "unveiled" from the huge blackberry thicket are leafing out. There's lots to do -- wear shoes with good traction, and bring gloves and a shovel or loppers if you have them.

Meet at Creekside Park, south end of Santa Clara Street (south of Central, west of San Pablo). It's a short walk from El Cerrito Plaza BART. By bus, take AC Transit 72 to San Pablo and Carlson and walk west. At Tulip Flooring, u jog south on Adams Street and follow the creekside walkway west to the park. Or take the 43 to Pacific East Mall, 3288 Pierce St., and follow the creek east along the south edge of the parking lot into the park.

PROGRESS ON CERRITO CREEK TRAIL
One of F5C's long-term projects is completing a pedestrian and bicycle route from the Ohlone Greenway to Eastshore State Park, following Cerrito Creek as closely as possible. There is progress on two segments in the City of Albany: On Buchanan Street, you now can bypass what formerly was a rather scary light at the freeway entrance. And this Thursday, Feb. 22, the Albany Traffic Commission will discuss alternatives for striping Pierce Street to create a bicycle lane, 7 pm at Albany City Hall.

LOOKING FOR NEW F5C BOARD MEMBERS
If you're interested in becoming more involved in Friends of Five Creeks -- e.g. helping make decisions, taking on responsibility for some of our activities, and attending every-other-month board meetings -- please let me know.

ACTIVITIES OF OTHERS

TALK ON TULE ELK
One of the frustrations of being on our Board is that the Close to Home series of talks is on the same first Monday night. Monday, March 5, Mike Moran, East Bay Regional Park District Naturalist Mike Moran will speak and show slides on Tule elk, and the hidden remnant herds of this largest East Bay mammal. The talk is at 7:30 pm Monday, March 5, at Montclair Presbyterian Church, 5701Thornhill Rd. in the Montclair area of Oakland. Take the Thornhill exit on Highway 13 and go east 1/4 mile. Information at (510) 655-6658 or www.close-to-home.org.

MORE WORK PARTIES
There are lots of volunteer opportunities Saturday. Friends of Baxter Creek will weed and plant at the Gateway project at the north end of the Ohlone Greenway, starting at 9:30 am, between Key Blvd and San Pablo Ave., Conlon and MacDonald.

The San Lorenzo Creek restoration group will weed and plant 10 am to noon Saturday; meet at Foothill Blvd. and Russell Way, Hayward (bring water). For information contact Paul Modrell, 670-5248 or paulm@acpwa.org.

Hope to see you soon!
Susan Schwartz
