Update 11-9-2007 (evening)
One more oil-spill bulletin: To facilitate bird rescue and cleanup, the entire Eastshore State Park will be closed Saturday, Nov. 10, and possibly Sunday, Nov. 11. Oiled birds are coming ashore exhausted; passers-by scare them offshore again. In addition, many beaches remain closed. For updates, go to www.ebparks.org.
To give trained rescuers a better chance of saving birds, please do not visit the following areas (south to north) at least Saturday, and probably Sunday: Bay Trail from Emeryville to Berkeley Brickyard; Brickyard and Brickyard Cove, cove at mouth of Strawberry Creek and shore extending west toward Berkeley Marina, North Basin, Albany Beach, shoreline at Albany Bulb (particularly the west end), and waterfront trails at Pt. Isabel north to Richmond Marina area.
Although the Berkeley Marina area is not closed, many birds are coming ashore there and rescuers are working, so that is another waterfront best avoided this weekend.
In addition, beaches at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (Oakland), Crown Beach (Alameda), and Miller-Knox Regional Park (Richmond), remain closed for safety.
There are reports that oil may be moving north beyond the Richmond Bridge, as well as further south, so you might want to take a walk in those areas, documenting signs of oil and reporting any oiled animals.Good news -- that is, reports that you didn't find anything -- also welcome! Again, check www.ebparks.org for updates.
Thanks for being flexible.
